Advantage of GATE Score in PSU Recruitment

To make their process of recruiting suitable candidates for various engineering posts easy, many Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) in India consider the GATE score as the determining factor to shortlist eligible candidates. As a result more and more PSU aspirants have started taking the GATE exams that are conducted every year by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and the top seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) on behalf of the National Coordination Board GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.

The GATE score is given weight age by PSUs for recruitment because the GATE exam tests a candidate’s capability in engineering concepts and managerial skills. Therefore, the notification regarding recruitment is released by most of the PSUs just after the announcement of GATE exam dates. This gives candidates interested in PSU recruitment ample time to prepare themselves for the GATE exam keeping in mind the GATE score cut offs for various PSUs. These timely recruitment notifications by PSUs also help students in understanding the importance of GATE score for getting job in a PSU of their choice. The GATE score is usually considered valid for three years, but in case of PSUs it varies from company to company.

In addition to giving a candidate an edge when it comes to joining reputed companies, the GATE score is also considered for admissions to various post graduate programs offered at IITs and IISCs.GATE score is also an eligibility factor for the award of Junior Research Fellowship in CSIR Laboratories.

Every year around 50 PSUs invite applications from interested candidates who have a valid GATE score. As the Answer Key for GATE 2017 has already been announced, some of the PSUs such as Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), and Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) have already concluded the application process for recruitment through GATE score. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has already started its recruitment drive to fill 2,510 posts of Junior Telecom Officers (JTOs) through GATE score. Similarly,West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBSEDCL) has released its recruitment notification(Hyperlink: WBSEDCL notification story given separately) for 112 posts of Assistant Engineers.
However, PSUs like Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC Ltd.), Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL), and Cabinet Secretariat are yet to announce their recruitment drive on the basis of GATE score. Apart from these PSUs, there are many other GATE PSUs .
